When you write a good article about something that relates to the content of your website or blog, and submit it to a free article directory, you must read the terms and conditions. Most websites will forbid the use of affiliate or referral links within the article but give your link at the end, inviting the reader to click on for further information about the subject of your article. This will bring genuine leads to your webpage, where you have placed your own offers, sponsored advertising, referral promotions and affiliate links.
You may wonder how often any of your free articles will actually be read. The main advantage with a big article directory is that search engines will find your article from the keywords you add when you submit your article. Some directories have a rating system so other users will be reading your work to rate it, and may find it interesting enough to click on your link. There is often an incentive for rating, usually if you rate other articles your own gets a higher ranking within the directory.
