I have written several articles and blog posts on the value of writing for passive income, and each time I have pointed out that passive income should be part of a long term income strategy. Writers who make money out of revenue sharing sites or article page views payments need a lot of patience and must be productive. Passive income generally builds up slowly, as more articles are published online, and with some active promoting.
Fewer writers get the opportunity to write for upfront payments, because some form of acceptance or qualification is required in order to receive this type of payment for writing.
What is an upfront payment?
Any time a writer submits an article that will result in payment, of a set amount, can be counted as an upfront payment. Freelancers and contract writers generally know how much to expect after writing to guidelines or instructions, as do bloggers who write sponsored blog posts or get paid to post website reviews.
Writers who publish articles on sites that offer a set payment can count on upfront payments being added to their accounts. First they have to meet an accepted standard of writing or attain a status that qualifies them to be paid upfront.

How do upfront earnings compare to income from page views?
Personally I have earned twice as much in upfront payments in the past two years than I have gained in passive income. This is not a deterrent to me, and I will keep writing more articles for page views and revenue share. I regard it rather as proof of success in being able to write online articles and know exactly how much money I will get paid for each one.
It is a personal decision, and many writers choose to make money from passive income and from upfront payments, when they can. I do promote a few affiliate products on my blogs, but my main aim is to draw attention to articles I have published at Helium, which earn passive income from the revenue sharing system.
I maintain my rating stars at Helium so I can continue to earn money from my articles every day.
I have also received upfront payments for most of my articles at Helium, but only after I gained writing stars. I need to maintain a high writing score so my 5 writing stars continue to qualify me for the highest amount of upfront payments.
Whoever says getting paid to write is easy should reconsider that statement. Income from page views, and from upfront payments, does depend upon effort and writing ability. There is no such thing as a quick and easy way to make a lot of money for writing online articles. It is possible, however, for an active writer can earn a lot of money for writing, year after year.

Launched on June 7 2010, Fortitude magazine is a great opportunity to get writing and be published. Articles, reviews, rants, news stories, personal views, opinion pieces, short stories and poems are all acceptable. These can be serious, funny, controversial or personal, as the writer chooses.
Get Paid to Write for Fortitude
Fortitude pays out $10 or more for a front page piece, and a good writer can make money every day.
There is small subscription fee $1.99 of per month, payable in advance ($23.88 a year), but for that a writer can submit an unlimited number of articles, rants, opinion pieces, news stories, essays, analysis or personal stories. All of these will be published.
There are additional payments to be earned in the Review Center, for reading and rating, which soon cover the cost of a monthly subscription.
A new edition of Fortitude magazine is published online every day. At least half the pieces submitted achieve front page status, and each writer gets $10 or more credited instantly on publication.
It is quick and easy to withdraw earnings from a Fortitude account.
